Re R.O.1 Magnetos.

We recently sent a new R.O.1 Magneto No.75333 to the Clyde Automobile Co. of Glasgow.

The following is a copy of our Inspector's report :-

"On testing the car I at first found the performance on magneto exceptionally good, but after about 8 to 10 miles, it was inclined to be erratic on picking up from slow running. I could not improve this at all. The driver was doing a fairly long run this afternoon, and I asked him to do it on magneto and let me know how it behaved. If it does not go off any further after a hard run, it is just about passable as an emergency ignition."

P.S. Since writing the above we have received a telegram from our Mr. Reid in which he states that the R.O.1 Magneto just fitted to this car has failed, and he asks for a replacement to be sent to the Clyde Automobile Co. at once.

EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}

"Further to my memo of Oct. 4th., the car was run for about 40 miles after I wrote you. The driver reported that the slow running got worse, the engine stopping several times, and eventually it could not be re-started. When cold it was again quite O.K.
I tried it on the Monday morning, and found it O.K. at first, but after about 10 miles it was very little use under about 18 m.p.h. I wired you for another magneto. Miss Thomson called round to see what was going to be done. I explained that a new magneto would be fitted and asked for an opportunity of thoroughly testing it before handing it over. Miss Thomson was anxious that this should be done and I arranged with the driver to run him over to Alloa and back to attend to GF-55, a distance of about 65 miles. I drove out and he drove back. The magneto was used all the time, and is now quite O.K.
Stewart is quite satisfied with it, and is telling Miss Thomson so. I have not seen her since. She is very keen on everything R-R.{Sir Henry Royce} and I understand has already stated her intention of owning one of the rumoured new 40/50 chassis if it materialises."
