81487 Expl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/MJ. November 14th.1931. The S.U. Carburetter Co. Ltd., East Works, Bordesley Green Road, Adderley Park, BIRMINGHAM. For the attention of Mr. Skinner Esq. Dear Mr. Skinner, Many thanks for your letter of the 2nd.inst. We find it to be exactly as you say, with the larger carburetter it is more difficult to get good distribution. Our difficulty has, of course, been that with the 40/50 we have had to put a bend in the induction system in order to get this under the bonnet. This we know is bad for distribution, but apart from this we have found the distribution with this larger carburetter to be very unstable. Before we can completely satisfy ourselves how much better or worse the S.U. carburetter is for distribution to the emulsion type, we are going to run a test with the vertical S.U. carburetter which you have been good enough to send us and which we can fit to a pipe that has given us satisfactory results with a vertical emulsion Claudel. With regard to trying a car with an S.U. carburetter for the week end. I am afraid that this is not possible at the moment, but if I can arrange for the loan of a car I certainly will do so. Sir Henry Royce is criticising your carburetter because he says needle wear takes place after a certain time. We have never heard of this in the latest models and we do not know where he obtained his information, but should like to know if there is any truth in it. | ||
