STEERING. --------------- Referring to Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} 30.4.25. of which we have supplied BY/HEB{H. Biraben} with a copy, the position is that we do not agree to making two sets of steering boxes merely over a difference of .250" I have arranged with RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} that we will modify the drawings which we have already issued in accordance with N.Scheme 1981 in order to make actually the parts shown on N.Scheme 1983, so that N.Scheme 1981 so far as we are concerned, will not be made, as I do not see it has any points which call for it, whilst it will undoubtedly double the cost of the experimental work. N.Scheme 1983 maintained the old centre distance for the steering column, keeps the inner roller bearing closer in to the lever, taking the thrust from the nut, and generally speaking it is sounder, and one does not see any reason why it should not be perpetuated if anything at all is done with it. At the moment we are issuing it experimentally only. In regard to the rest of the information dealt with in Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} 30.4.25. that is, the use of the whitemetal thread for the main nut and roller bearings on the rocking shaft on the pendulum lever side of the box, this is a matter which we shall have to take up with CJ. and would like to have Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}' views as to whether these are necessary in the sense that he wishes:- a/- To replace existing columns with these parts, or b/- bring the new parts on at some point on production, as soon as they are produced, and scrap the old ones. Upon receipt of this information we will take the matter up with Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} and CJ. and will then inform Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} exactly what we have done.
