ORIGINAL To Rg.{Mr Rowledge} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/CHP. c. for Mr. Tweedie. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/CHP.1/MJ.13.12.30. Y-H-53 COMPRESSION IGNITION ENGINE. Connecting Rod Failure. We enclose herewith a sketch shewing the extent of the cracks discovered in the connecting rod of the above unit. There is another crack on the opposite side of the rod (not shewn in the sketch) similar to the one shewn, except that there is no horizontal crack near the top of the vertical one. The sketch is drawn full size. This connecting rod has completed a total of 216 1/4 hours running. We should like to point out that we were unaware of the presence of these cracks, and that they were not discovered until the engine was stripped down, after our last progress report was issued. The matter will, therefore, be reported officially in our next progress report. We are expecting to be in a position to resume work on the compression ignition unit in the course of a day or two.
