To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EH. c. to J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} c. to Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} X.1445 DESTRUCTION TEST ON EPICYCLIC GEAR --- We have run an "Eagle" engine for 6 hours on a six cylinder period. The engine was run on the Hangar with a propeller. (X.3045) The propeller shaft was one which had been condemned because of the low Stanton Test, it had only stood 485 blows. (X.3025) The propeller hub was fitted with the latest improved bolts with the taper under the head. (X.3046) The planet pinions were a special set which had been recessed so that the burr caused by drilling the final holes should not upset the faces. After 6 hours run one of the connecting rods broke on the engine. We have had the gear all to pieces and examined it. There is no sign of any part failing. The feature which was noticeable was that the taper collar on the propeller shaft which the hub screws up against was discoloured by heat, no doubt caused by the vibration of the shaft. It was quite local at that spot. The taper bolts remained quite tight. We consider this quite overcomes the trouble we have had with the previous ones breaking in the hub. EH. | ||
