| TO R. {Sir Henry Royce} FROM Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to ES. WOR. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to R. {Sir Henry Royce} Ds. c. to RV. PHANTOM - COOLING. Recent tests which have been carried out show on the Phantom II cooling is not now as good as/the original cars. It will be remembered that soon after we had despatched a few Phantom II cars we got into very serious trouble with radiators becoming stopped up. It was a very serious position because when it occurred the car was rendered useless. We stopped making any more of the standard radiators with the 6 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m. x 7 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m tubes and changed to 5½ m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m by 7 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m. When this modification was made it was recognised that we should be about 3° C. worse for cooling. We made about 150 cars with the 5½ m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m x 7 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m and the point was then raised that we had on hand £1,000 worth of radiator tubes of the 6 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m x 7 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m which could be made into 6 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m x 7½ m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m so that we should have the same gap as the 5½ m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m x 7 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m. A test was made and the results obtained shewed no appreciable difference in the cooling. We have, however, gone carefully over the results again and on the average we are 3° C. hotter with the 6 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m x 7½ m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m compared with the 5½ m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m x 7 m {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} /m tubes. These two modifications added together mean that at average temperatures we are 5° C. hotter on the present car. Handwritten text: X7250. X566. | ||
