-2- Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}10/KW.19.11.34. There is a further point on which we are not clear. We have, over here, a Saginaw steering gear taken from a 1934 model La{L. A. Archer} Salle. We believe that the weight of the front end of the La{L. A. Archer} Salle is approximately the same as that of our Phantom II, namely 2450 lbs., and yet we are told by the Marles people that a gear of the dimensions of the La{L. A. Archer} Salle gear is only suitable for a front axle weight of about half this amount. Therefore either the Marles people under-estimate the capacity of this type of gear, or the La{L. A. Archer} Salle has an overstressed steering box. We find it difficult to believe the latter of the alternatives and we should be very glad if you could give us your opinion on the matter. We have cabled you to-day asking for the helix angle of the cam in the Cadillac 16 steering box; we should be obliged if you would let us know also the helix angle of the La{L. A. Archer} Salle steering cam as we are unable at the moment to dismantle this gear. Thanking you in anticipation, We remain, Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
