y4263 Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EP {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} 18/H3.10.24. 20-HP. Cross Steering Tube Ball End Lubrication. We have received one or two complaints that customers have not been able to lubricate the ball ends satisfactorily, and when using the gun,oil cannot be forced through this joint, in fact the gun becomes choc-o-bloc. We have recently been able to investigate one of these complaints and found that it was quite justified. The only reason we can find for this trouble is the excellent bed between the ball pieces and the cup. By slightly grooving or distorting this bed we find that oil can be forced through satisfactorily. As a matter of fact the same customers complains of the steering being stiff and although these ball ends were not tight,on dismantling they certainly were dry and appeared to be short of lubrication. We shall be glad, therefore, if this point can receive your consideration, as to whether some improvement in this respect can be embodied. It is appreciated that the trouble does not exist on new chassis but only when cars have been in service for some time and thegood bedding of the ball as above described as been obtained. EP. {G.
