328 E/HDY.{William Hardy}1/HP.19.2.37. Phantom III Gearbox. The Experimental department have suggested that to reduce cost, the various features at present provided to make certain that the 2nd speed driven gear is assembled on the 3rd motion shaft in the correct relation to the pipe in the shaft should be deleted. This means that when this is done there is no certainty that the scoop which lubricates the spigot bush and 3rd speed gear bush will not have been put out of action by wrong assembling of the gear on the splines. We have discussed this with Mr Norman, and he is in agreement with this suggestion. In the case of the Phantom III we should be no worse off in the event of a scoop being out of action than we have been in many cars delivered which have had no scoops, so long as we do not delete the grooves and holes which have always been provided. The flanged piece G.84801 should be shortened at the front end, and the washer G.84803/7 should now bear on the tops of the splines as was done before the scoop was introduced. We understand that these alterations will facilitate the assembling of the box as the present washer is troublesome to keep in place. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} is in agreement with these proposals and we should therefore be glad if you would kindly issue the necessary instructions. E/HDY.{William Hardy} | ||
