10,000 MILES TEST IN FRANCE ON NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I.

It is certain that this car will not be ready to start on the 13th.inst.

You will see by R's recent memos. that his instructions contained in Rl/M28.8.25. have been considerably modified, also in his memo. 25/M 1.9.25 he instructed that the car should not leave for France until it had all the right parts fitted. [handwritten note: see Rl/M10.9.25]

We are still not through with experiments on steering, for instance, the new worm which R.{Sir Henry Royce} proposes, [handwritten note: for immediate use] the first one will not be ready until the middle of next week.

The experiments on the steering are progressing very satisfactorily, even R.{Sir Henry Royce} appears to be satisfied with the progress which is being made. There is however so many features to be considered when judging the steering that we consider it would be most unwise to rush into anything until we were satisfied it was what is required. We do not want to start the 10,000 miles until we are satisfied that the steering is likely to be satisfactory.

In the case of high speed wobbles, it was then necessary to do something immediately to the cars to get over this, but modifications which are contemplated for the steering gear, we do not anticipate will affect high speed wobbles in the least. The only alteration which will affect the high speed wobbles problem is the hydraulic dampers.
