COPY. To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from BJ. BJ9/H1.3.26. AXLE RATIOS FOR PHANTOM CHASSIS INTENDED FOR AMERICA. BY4/H25.2.26. This appears to be rather an important matter, and perhaps you had better refer it to R.{Sir Henry Royce} Have we made comparative tests on a New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I to obtain the results of a 14 and 15-tooth axle in regard to heating and petrol consumption, etc? B.J. COPY OF MEMORANDUM BY5/H2.3.26. Referring to BJ9/H1.3.26, and further to BY4/H-25.2.26, we have from time to time made certain tests in connection with the use of a 14/52 axle. The tests you have in mind were carried out on the Silver Ghost some years back, when there was a question as to whether a 14/52 or 15/52 combination was the better proposal. At that time it was pointed out that the petrol consumption would be increased in the neighbourhood of about 6 to 7% whilst there would be a slight increase in fussiness of the engine. As a set off against these, of course, one gets very much better acceleration at low speeds. I have followed your instruction and written R.{Sir Henry Royce} for his views on the matter. (Sgd.)
