Dear Sirs,

Re. Mrs. A.M. Nicholas -.Chassis 3.AZ.56.

From your letter of the 12th April, it appears that you are still having some trouble with chassis 3.AZ.56.

Shock Absorber Control System.

The figures you have taken from the car are approximately correct, except for the governor range in the soft position. It is difficult to understand that there is no increase in pressure with speed in the soft position if you get the pressure rise in the hard position, namely from 27 lbs. up to 32 lbs. It looks as if your gauge may be sticking for the lower readings.

It is quite possible that 33 lbs. cannot be exceeded as there is a safety release valve fitted to limit the maximum pressure. Actually this is generally set at a higher figure.

The attached drawing F.87072 will give you a full idea of the control unit. Valve 'A' is the hand control valve. 'B' is the governor valve. By altering the thickness of washer F.84629 - 33 the governor range can be varied. A thinner washer increased the poundage at higher speeds.

Front Wheel Wobble.

The most likely cause of low speed wobbles on Phantom III. is insufficient friction load in the cross steering tube joints. To be free from this complaint the friction load of each joint should not be less than 3 lbs. measured at the opposite end of the cross steering tube. More than 3 1/2 lbs. begins to become objectionable by making the steering heavy. These loads should be measured by removing the
