Objections and operational difficulties with a change gear mechanism, particularly regarding the quadrant shape and engaging gears.

The great objection to the change gear mechanism is the shape of the quadrant, i.e. when in top gear, the lever is pushed forward to disengage, moved to the right and pulled back again for second, and then pushed right through for first. The reverse is by bring-ing to neutral position and moving further to the right and backward.
This difficulty however, is entirely owing to the afore mentioned difficulties with the centres.

A further trouble in this box is that in pulling up on top gear if the engine be stopped and the car stopped dead before the gear is put to neutral position, it may be impossible to engage the fixed reduction gears (in order to get the lever in neutral position) owing to the position of the gear wheels, but this should not be
