My Dear Grylls, Many thanks for your letter of the 6th instant, and was glad that the bearings got through to you in time and note the trouble with the small spigot bearing which now explains itself. With regard to the fears of your Designs Dept., regarding the oil in the Oilite cage, it seems to me that they have overlooked the fact that this bearing is only running when the clutch is thrown out and personally I should not imagine it to be necessary for any additional oil retention on the job. Again this would make the bearing even more special than at present which would further increase the cost, but we could of course readily provide some retention either by the same felt arrangement as New Departure or merely by fitting a plain plate, and after the holiday I will lay a scheme out for you. With regard to our test on the New Departure bearing the leakage was mainly through the felt, and while it is of course not possible to be definite, I am almost certain that no leakage whatever occurred between the outerand the shield. Referring to the 35 mm bearing, I am enclosing copy of our drawing B.7436 outlining the overall | ||
