SIDE STEERING TUBE SPRINGS. X8450

With reference to the straightening out of the position with regard to the multiplicity of side steering tube ends which have recently been standardised. We give below a summary of the present situation, from which it will be seen that, with the exception of 100 cars, a single type of end will be universal on the 20 HP., and every Phantom will be fitted with S.S. springs to N.Sch.2259.

20 HP.

All 20 HP's on which the side steering tubes are being changed, and all future 20 HP. cars to be produced, will be fitted with side steering tube ends to N.Sch.2308 in which the springs have .400" travel. The only 20 HP. cars therefore which will be on the road with anything but this scheme are 100 cars which were fitted with the stronger tubes and ends made of existing pieces to F.54584. It was necessary to produce these cars to maintain continuity of production while N.Sch.2308 was being tested and manufactured.

40/50 PHANTOM.

When the present scheme of replacements has been carried out, every 40/50 Phantom car on the road will be equipped with side steering tube ends to N.Sch.2258. This consists of 1500 lbs. opposed springs with .600" total travel. Apart from the increased travel and lower spring stress, the
