Method and result of a stress test on a mechanical link, which fractured after 10 reversals.

-3- the link to swing round on its mandle, consequently we had to braze the link to the mandle (I thought this would be preferable to any system of keying or pinning). A bar was connected to the link by means of a bolt as shown in the sketch, the reverse stress being obtained by removing the bar and taking the reaction on the opposite side of the link. The bar was pulled over by two men sufficiently far in each direction to give a slight permanent set. The link fractured after 10 reversals of stress and the fracture is shown roughly in the sketch. | ||
