some reason skids across the road at 45°, to correct that skid it means the steering should be turned well over on the lock in the opposite direction. With a low geared steering it is not possible to do this without changing the position of the hands on the wheel. It is this changing of the position of the hands that is necessary which may be so disconcerting in a skid. We have no actual experience of this.
We do not see how this can be avoided on a big car like the Phantom.
We have got to provide a steering which is reason- ably light for parking the car in a confined space - with the present large low pressure tyres this can only be obtained with a low geared steering.
When comparing steerings, we think it is essential that the cars should be approximately the same size and weight, fitted with similar tyres and similar range of deflection in the road springs.
We have relatively much less trouble with the 20 HP. steerings.
We are making enquiries re. Bugatti.
