RE - ROAD WHEEL BRAKES.
ANTI-SQUEAKING DEVICE

I have shewn R.{Sir Henry Royce} the sketch of Mr.Hancock's anti-squeaking device we saw in Paris, and mentioned that it was reported by GMH. to give good results.

The idea as you will no doubt remember is as shewn in the sketch and consists of a pressure pad standing somewhat proud of the brake shoe surface and made to lift by means of a pivoted lever an elastic toe on the trailing shoe against the pressure of a spring.

The principle of operation is that the toe of the trailing shoe is always kept in effective contact with the drum when the brake is on, and thereby damps out vibrations set up in the free piece of drum between the two brake shoes.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} is rather inclined to doubt whether the device would continue to act as intended after a certain amount of wear had occurred on the friction surfaces, but he thinks it suggests that we should make an experiment with the trailing shoe pivoted in the centre
