Dear Mr. Haldenby, I have been considering some improved plant for Royce Ltd. They require to cut their type of gears quickly and accurately, and their plant is slow, feeble, and inaccurate, as far as I can tell at a distance, and I am thinking of recommending them to buy a No.19 Sunderland Gear Plainer from Parkinson's of Shipley, Yorks. Do you know anything for or against it, and will you kindly ask Mr. Wormald? It is a machine of great weight, and costs about £1000., but should do everything Royce Ltd. want, quickly and well, except of course their small gears, which will still be done on one of their two rather ancient Fellows. If you are going to Manchester sometime, you might look in and give me your impression of their plant, and if you could suggest any tools which would help them to get through the work more quickly, economically, or better, I shall be very grateful. Royce Ltd. is now being managed by Messrs Coley, (Mechanical) Bentley, (Electrical) and Kenyon (financial,) and I have sent them a copy of this letter. My own opinion is that they may want some of the smaller boring and turning mills for their gear wheel blanks. I am writing to Mr. Wormald on the subject of Royce Ltd. when I have more time.
