To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} x772 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/AD2.7.30. X4522. LEFT-HAND CHASSIS. Replying to Sgl8/E1.7.30. The position of the seven points as enumerated in Oyl/DM{D. Munro}12.6.30 is as follows :- 1. BUMPERS. West WitteringHenry Royce's home town have criticised the design of bumper which we obtained from America and fitted to the first left-hand chassis, and have sent through sketches of how they recommend a bumper should be made. At the moment we have received no designs for a modified bumper and we do not know definitely whether it is our intention to manufacture bumpers, in the past these have always been bought outside. Until however, it has been decided definitely what bumpers are going to be used we think it would be a waste of time to carry out the underwriter's collision tests. 2. CLUTCH. We have carried out sufficient tests and do not need any convincing as regards the advantages under continuous slipping conditions of fixing the fabric on to the driven member. The reason that we have not standardised this scheme previously is because we had difficulty in making a clutch of this type to give us a smooth engagement. We have however, proved that it is possible to get a smooth engagement with this type of clutch and we are therefore standardising it both for right-hand and left-hand P.II. cars. 3. ROAD SPRINGS. We examined the road springs off the American car. There was nothing in the construction or design of the spring which was unusual or different to what we use. The question of springing will be dealt with separately in another report. | ||
