INSPECTION OF WHEELS ON 20 HP ROLLS

Car was sent here per Experimental Driver, Mr. Maddox, on the 17-3-24. Mr. Maddox had driven the car for the first 5,000 miles or so and had not experienced any noise from wheels. Nuts had purposely been left so that they could be undone by fingers only. It was noticed after a few miles that the nuts were up too tightly to be undone by hand, so they were again undone to the original slackness. This process was repeated over a number of journeys, but eventually for long distance running the nuts were spannered up to the ordinary tightness to which they are accustomed to fasten up other wheels.

A general inspection left us with the impression that the outside spokes were slack but it was found that the spare wheel was in the same condition, and as it had not been used it was assumed that the spokes were something like what they were when despatched.

The locknuts were rusting and dirt accumulated round the outer spokes near the locknuts. It is thought that the rust is due to "Blasting" by dirt and grit as the wheels in question stand out further than standard wheels.

No difficulty was experienced in using the drifted spanner on serrated locknuts.

All the wheels were stuck slightly and required to be kicked at the tyre before they could be removed.
