To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/G.W.H. X500 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}21/JH.30.6.36. 22-C-V Steering. Since our memo. of 29.6.36. on the above steering it has occurred to us that the probable reason why play has developed is that the new roller follower is smaller in dia. than the one previously fitted. In order to correct this it will be necessary to reduce the thickness of washer A on the attached print, and increase washer B by an equal amount. We enclose four washers of varying thickness to replace the existing washer B. The best way to carry out this job is to work with the inner half of the box marked C removed and to hold the gear in the vice with the column horizontal and the rockershat pointing downwards. Packing pieces can then be placed between D and E until the desired adjustment is obtained. The thickness of this packing piece is the amount by which A must be reduced and B increased.
