Committee discusses valve spring vibrations, failures, and potential design modifications.

| (2) Mr Swetnam remarked that some of the valve springs vibrated more violently than others on the test rig. The Committee agreed that this point was of some importance, and should have special attention from Mr Platford, and the rig be inspected by the members. * Mr Wormald pointed out that valve springs have a peculiar winding up action when compressed, and suggested that this might in some way affect the breakages, and perhaps it would be worth while trying a ball race at one end of the spring, to prevent this action. The Committee were of the opinion that the winding up action was extremely small, and was not likely to affect the failures. Mr Barrington suggested that it would perhaps be advisable to get out designs of a spring with still lower stress, notwithstanding the fact that the breakages were apparently caused in some way by the method of supporting the spring; the further modification should be in the direction of increasing the diameter of the coils as previously agreed upon. The Committee agreed that Mr Swetnam should issue instructions for special spring washers, and also get out a design for a valve spring having a larger diameter of coil.
