X1114 BUICK MOTOR COMPANY FLINT, MICHIGAN VALVE-IN-HEAD Buick STRAIGHT EIGHT STEADMAN March 31, 1936 noted as/STD Mr. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Rolls-Royce Limited Derby, England Dear Mr. Robotham: The following is in reply to your inquiry of March 11th, regarding the life of the viscon type oil cooler used on our 1931 to 1935 Eight Cylinder Buicks. I enclose photograph of a chart showing loss in cooling efficiency of the three viscons which we used -- plotted against mileage. You will notice that after the coolers were cleaned with benzol the cooling efficiency returned very close to the original figure. After a number of such tests we decided to instruct our field organization to clean these coolers after 20,000 miles. I also enclose pages taken from our Shop Manual showing the cleaning instructions as issued to the field. In brief our experience may be summarized as follows: The loss of oil cooling efficiency is about one degree per one thousand miles with the oil temperature regulator -- and about three degrees per one thousand miles without the oil temperature regulator. Very truly yours, C. A.{Mr Adams} Chayne. Asst. Chief Engineer CAC:O Encl... Handwritten notes: Cannot quite understand this Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} noted as/STD "BUICK'S THE BUY" | ||
