With reference to the back axle of this car, the increase in power since it was originally designed calls for the axle shafts to be increased, that is to say, they are stressed very much higher than P. 2. with this large engine. We are revising the existing 25HP. hypoid axle in accordance with this. It means using the next size bearings on the differential and a modification to the hubs. We also think it would be desirable to increase the thrust bearing on the pinion, as though this compares favourably with P. 2. on the basis of 3.5 litres it will not be so with 4.5 litres. Since the above modifications alter the axle tube we should like to take advantage of this to increase the back track approximately 1" more than the front track, as has been done on P. 2. This would be a great advantage in the bodywork, the rear hubs being still inside the front hubs. The 25Hp. brake gear is considerably older in design than P. 2. and there are one or two points on the latter which seem capable of being made more cheaply. We should like to revise the brake gear in accordance with P. 2. practice when it would appear that we can move the brake drum out towards the wheel approximately 1.250" aside at the maximum diameter, apart from the increase of track. These two increases would greatly assist the bodywork. We are sending a layout of these proposals in the course of a few days. We had made some progress in scheming the banjo axle, as had it been adopted it would have been a very urgent job. We have now dropped all this work. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
