COPY. R4/P 20.8.13. To By from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Re Double Brakes. - X2B. With reference to brake strap guides on the Double Rear Brakes, I see no real reason for any trouble with these. At the same time, there may be a lot in your surmise, and it would certainly be well to test a rear axle, in which the ball bearings in the road wheels were purposely made slack, to see whether this would affect the brake shoe steadies. Another idea would be to jack up the car and wear these brakes more and more, until it was necessary to re-place the shoes, and see whether the wear had any ill effect upon any part of the mechanism. With reference to pins G 2796 & G 2797, I do not think that with the conical fit there ought to be the collar shown upon it. If the pin will not stop exactly, then I think we ought to increase the taper rather than introduce this shoulder. Perhaps, however, it is incorrectly drawn. There is also a diameter on both the pin and washer which is not needed. The black ink lines show the way I think the work should be arranged. This would make it simpler, shorter and lighter. encl.
