Re: Petrol Tank Capacity & Weight.
Bentley Cresta.

We have read in several foreign papers and have heard from Sr. how it is desirable to have a very large petrol tank on cars used for Continental Touring, especially in France and Germany where long distances can be accomplished between ordinary normal meals. On the Autobahnen we understand the distances between filling stations are great, in some cases 60 miles. To be able to go 250 miles at a consumption of 11.5 m.p.g. one needs 22 gallons real capacity in the tank.

Supposing then that the filling stations be 50 miles distant, one would have to stop at the end of 200 miles and fill up to be safe. One would then fill up with 17 gallons and would travel a further 200 miles. It will be seen that, with a full tank giving a 250 miles range theoretically, actually under these circumstances only 200 miles per stop is possible.

We have made some calculations to see what increase in weight would result by putting in the Bentley Cresta a 22 gallon tank instead of the 18 gallons B.5. Continental Tank - see appendix. It will be seen that the increase in weight would be 10% or 2.13 lbs on the tank itself. Because one has a maximum capacity of 23.75 gallons one need not of necessity always use it.

We would propose a 22 gallon tank for the Cresta.

There is a good article in La{L. A. Archer} Vie Automile January 10th.1939 dealing with this subject in which it points out the Continental view point, and quotes the 202 Peugeot as having a tank of 250 miles range.
