BROOKLANDS TESTS. PHANTOM 'V' SERIES PERFORMANCE. HIGH SPEED TESTS. The first series of tests carried out on this car were concerned with maximum speeds. As the car is primarily intended to be used with the cut-out closed, and the latter device cannot legally be used in Great Britain, the majority of the tests were conducted without an open exhaust. It is not permissible to make both-way runs on Brooklands, all laps having to be made in one direction on the track. All timed speeds were therefore recorded as average speeds for one complete lap. This method has the added advantage of reducing the personal error in manipulating the stop watch as in all cases the time interval exceeded 2 mins. Lap speeds, however, cannot be treated as being of the same definite value as mean both way speeds, as owing to the location of the track a wind may be definitely somewhat advantageous or adverse for a complete circuit of the track. We have indicated the max. speeds attained by means of corrected speedometer readings. These however are not of much value to anyone who is conversant with the track. All these max. speed readings are liable to be somewhat misleading unless the fact that the car is purposely under-geared for track work is borne in mind. contd :- | ||
