CYLINDER HEADS.

Some time ago we asked you to try and get some sort of patent on the new type of head (EB.3844) which is now being used exclusively on the range of engines proposed for the post-war chassis programme.

At that time we had coupled with the application various forms of "raised crown" pistons. The reason for this was that this type of piston was showing promise on the "B.V" type of head, and its adaption to the new range of engines served yet another purpose (if it had been successful). It would have enabled one type of head to be standardised for a range of varying capacity engines, the necessary adjustment to combustion chamber space being incorporated in the piston (which would be different for each engine anyway).

Development has now proved that the raised crown piston is an undesirable feature, at least until we know more about it.

The development stage reached on the cylinder head is that we say basically EB.3844 in conjunction with the new type of engine, is an improvement over the "B.V", but we believe that we can still improve the shape of this combustion chamber when we get back to this type of work.

To come back to the possibility of covering this combustion chamber design by patent, it would help us if you could enlarge on the information already submitted to us (various citations around the same basic design).

We would like to know if there are any slight alterations left open to us which would enable a patent to be obtained.
