To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from G/Rb.{R. Bowen} 780 G/Rb.{R. Bowen}4/M/71/W.141236. -------------------- Re:20/25HP. Steering Column - Sec.7050. -------------------- The information now given replies to the questions raised by your Mr. Hardy in his conversation with us. (1) The factory cost of preparing for and chromium plating the steering tube (F.60845 or F61127) for its whole length is approximately £1. 0. 0. (2) If the plating of this part was limited to one half of its length, the saving in factory cost would be approximately 8/6. (3) The factory cost of serrating the Bolt for Cam Bearing (F.87135) is 1/8. (4) The factory cost of broaching the serrations on the Rocker shaft (F.60993) for Cam Bearing Bolt is 2 1/2d. (4a) If the broaching operations were deleted from the Ball Bearing Races (F.61240 - 2 off), the saving in Factory cost would be 4 1/2d. (5) A comparison of the Oilite Bush Bearing scheme with the Needle Bearing scheme - at top of column, shows the former to be cheaper by approximately 8/-. (6) If a plain bearing at the outer end of the Rocker shaft, as on Phantom III, was substituted for the needle bearings at present used, the saving in cost would be approximately 2/4.
