84057. 24.1.33. 3.PER.II. SHOCK DAMPERS. R.R.Sch.269. HAND CONTROLLED. The following modifications were made to these dampers before departure for trial. GENERAL. All main bearings were grooved longitudinally and the pressure lubricating passages from the high pressure cylinders deleted; blank end small diameter bearings. Valve springs of 100 lb/in. rating were substituted for the standard 172 lb/in springs. All inter-lever and main lever bolts were replaced by the drilled type, and a special point was made of tightening them up really tight. The fabric and "2 ply" bladder diaphragms were renewed, and shorter control plungers fitted, so that the lever sat square on the stop at maximum control position. Steel valves retained in all dampers. FRONT. Three point mounting casings were fitted and the steel expanding discs in the pistons were replaced by flat aluminium discs, in both front dampers. Nearside. Fitted with stiffened gland cover, containing four coil asbestos rope, plus rubber packing, also valve 'hat' clearance increased to .0075". Offside. Fitted with screwed type gland containing eight coil asbestos rope packing, also valve 'hat' clearance increased to .010". REAR. The steel expanding discs in the piston were left unaltered. Nearside. Fitted with screwed type gland containing eight coil asbestos rope packing, also valve 'hat' clearance increased to .010" Offside. Fitted with stiffened gland cover, containing four coil asbestos rope plus rubber packing, also valve 'hat' clearance increased to .0075". LOADS SET TO 40/40 LB. ALL ROUND, WITH GLANDS LOOSE. | ||
