We have been troubled with excessive oil leakage from the valve lift adjustors on the rocker cover, the crankcase breather and the flywheel end of the crankshaft. The first has been satisfactorily cured, and we are fitting a taller breather to improve the second. We propose fitting a felt packing behind the flywheel to deal with the leakage at this point; the present scheme allows a minimum clearance of approx. .100" between the flinger disc and the end cover, which is obviously doing little to retain the oil.

Future work on this unit will include work on the following :-

(a) Effect on power output of variations in valve timing and lift.

(b) Volumetric efficiency.

(c) Motoring loss analysis.

This work will be done when the engine is fitted with both the standard Bentley cylinder head and the new "ramp" head; after the piston seizure trouble, mentioned above, has been satisfactorily cured, so as to enable speeds up to 5000 R.P.M. to be obtained.
