SS.{S. Smith} FRAME CROSS MEMBER. X7380

As the results of the road testing seemed to point to the elimination of the cross as being the best solution, at any rate for the moment, of the radiator 'shimmy' on SS.{S. Smith}, we investigated the question of what tubular cross members could be got into the SS.{S. Smith} frame.

With a view to immediate trial we made a scheme in Derby which enabled the cross members to be temporarily fitted without altering pieces already existing on the car, or taking the frame to pieces, and this is what is on the car coming to Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.

These schemes are shewn on N_ schs. 2852/3., (prints herewith), except that we have modified them slightly with a view to permanence if the trial is successful.

Phantom has 4 cross members in this position viz: one 2.750 dia., one 2.875 dia., and two 1.875 dia., (long chassis).

These proposals are for one 2.5 dia. (existing), one 3" dia., and one 2" dia. Another cross member could be provided if found necessary. EAC. 7. had two 2.75 dia., and one 3" dia.

We think there should be tests made to determine the best stiffness. One would think we should be as stiff as we can be without bringing up other troubles.

Instead of one 3" dia. member, two of that approximate dia. could be used as indicated by centrelines if found desirable.
