Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} P/Unit. E.2/HP.18.4.36. re 22-C-V Further to our memo E.2/HP.17.4.36, it will be remembered that on the 10,000 mile on 21-C-IV in September an exhaust valve failure occurred on No.4. at 7800 miles, and that a new valve had to be fitted to No.1. at 8145 miles. These valves were in S/SLV steel, and the valve which failed on 22-C-V was of the same type in KE.965. We definitely want to get away from this type of valve. We have now cut up the remainder of the cylinder head, and we find the finning is fairly general. This, therefore, rather shows that any bad effects due to finning have not been the direct cause of valve failure, but is nevertheless undesirable, and we have instructed a special inspection for avoiding the use of finned castings.
