To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from EH. c. to BJ. c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} X.3172. EH1/LGB.9.17. 8th Sept. 1917. X.2375 - MAGNETOS - X.2753 X.3172. We have a number of the new type Watford Magnetos (C.6 type) in the stores, to be fitted to new engines. These magnetos are not the very latest but are an intermediate stage. On these, the contact breaker is not altered as regards design and it still has the steel rocking lever arm. The chief alteration is the use of aluminium and an improved base. The C.6 magneto weighs 12.25 lbs. compared with 14.5 lbs. for the present ones. The distributor is altered but it still has the same rotor with a carbon brush. The high tension wires are pushed into holes, the terminal screw is pointed so that it pierces the rubber insulation and makes contact. There are two gauze ventilators in the distributor to prevent condensation. We have heard from men at the front, that on the present Watfords they are troubled with rust on the armature due to condensation. Except for the alteration to the high tension the C.6 magneto will go on in place of the present standard. We have run one on an engine, it is quite satisfactory. The Air Board have sent us 4 magnetos to test which are the same as the C.6 except that they have Contd. | ||
