From the Rolls-Royce experimental archive: a quarter of a million communications from Rolls-Royce, 1906 to 1960's. Documents from the Sir Henry Royce Memorial Foundation (SHRMF).
Report concluding that a new system is significantly noisier and showed a 2% economy gain in bench tests, requiring further road tests.

carburetter; this modification to the H.V. choke makes the method of support the same as that of the Phantom III carburetter.

(3) Noise.

There is very much more noise with this system than standard (intake roar).

We consider it to be unnecessary to say any more than this about the actual air intake silencing qualities of this new system, as a correct impression will be obtained from road tests.

CONCLUSION.

Independent bench tests were carried out about 6 months ago to find to what extent maximum economy (petrol consumption) is effected by the difference in distribution between graphs Nos. 14 and 16.
The test was confined purely to comparative consumption loops between the two extreme conditions. The result was a gain of 2%.

It is very doubtful whether this figure gives any indication however of what the difference would be on the road. As we have been unable to get these figures checked up by road tests, the investigation has not been carried any further on the test bed. It is possible that engine roughness is affected quite considerably. The test bed work however would be considerable, and also be necessary. That is why a figure of merit was required from road tests.
