ROSS The Ross Refrigerating Unit FOR producing chilled water at temperatures from 35° to 70° Fahrenheit, the Ross Refrigerating Unit offers a simple, flexible installation which has many distinct advantages over the conventional ammonia or carbon dioxide system. This bulletin contains a general description of the unit and points out a few of its more outstanding advantages. Full information regarding these units, including their construction, steam and water consumption, and prices, may be obtained from any of the offices of the Ross Heater & Manufacturing Company. The Ross Refrigerating Unit represents a new application of an old and well-established principle. The fact that water under high vacuum will vaporize at low temperatures is utilized in producing the chilled water. Steam jet ejectors, of the type commonly used with power plant condensers and in various process industries, produce the required vacuum. These have no moving parts and require no attention or maintenance. General Arrangement The flow diagram on this page shows a typical refrigeration application for which the Ross Unit is well adapted. Water is to be cooled from 80° to 40° Fahrenheit. The water to be cooled enters the evaporator, or flash chamber, at 80° Fahrenheit. A vacuum of 29.75" Hg. (referred to 30" Barometer) is maintained in this evaporator and the incoming water is broken up into a fine spray, so that a small amount is immediately flashed to steam. The amount being flashed, which in this case is only Figure 1.
