SECRET. To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to RmHH. c. to Ve. c. to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/PJH. Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}5/JH.6.8.40. re Simplified Elevating Mounting for 40 m.m. Gun type BD.{Mr Berend} On QPL.106 herewith we show a project for the simplified edition of the Oerlikon Mounting 3.SLa. We have succeeded in reducing the number of pieces by revolving the nut in bearings within the fixed tube. In the Oerlikon design the central bolt is revolved. This entails gears and shaft drive to the bottom of the mounting. The objection to our scheme QPL.106 has been raised on the grounds of the long length of internal thread in the nut. This, however, is not fundamental, as the thread can be on the elevating portion with a short length of internal thread on the nut. At the moment it is not intended to go on with this scheme and the original of QPL.106 is attached to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/HH's. copy of this memo. for issue and file.
