Re - Eagle and Falcon Valve Stem Tops.

E/W18917.

Attached to Mr. Bailey's copy of this note is drawing No Lec. 859, showing the tapered type of valve stem. top applied in conjunction with the latest valve spring washers, and the altest spanners for operating the washers and nuts.X.3138.

The use of this tapered plug makes it impossible to hold the valve by means of the screwed rod shown in Fig.4 on drawing No. LeC. 641. We think it may be possible to insert a finger through the sparking plug hole of the cylinder and hold the valve head up on its seat. We want to know if this feat is possible, and also if there is any valve stem left protuding through the guide (both Eagle and Falcon) when the valve is allowed to drop on to the piston top with the pist n at the top of its stroke.

All the engines hitherto built are in the same boat and we seem to have managed in some way up till now, although the contingency of changing the valve spring or washer without removing the cylinder may not have arisen frequently.
