spring contact has to climb. We are arranging that contact is definitely off at the bottom of this hill but is made immediately after the spring contact reaches the top. Then the xxxxxxxxik sector will be long enough for contact to be maintained corresponding to the whole of the travel which takes place through the pinion being drawn into gear. It is even possible that this type of switch may be more satisfactory than the other.

Although we have not yet been able to work this apparatus completely, nevertheless we have been able to judge the amount of thump on engagement by helping the apparatus to function and there is no doubt that with this 20° spiral the thump on engagement is greatly reduced. Another way we have been able to try this is to put the gear into partial engagement and then apply the main current to the motor by operating the main switch by hand. There is no doubt but that the pinion goes right home on the spiral because a considerable rotation of the motor takes place in these circumstances.

The modification should be ready for us to-day and we hope to be able to let you know results of further tests.
