40/50 HP. Chassis - "NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I".
Bumper Test of Front Springs.

Towards the end of last month you handed to me for perusal a note Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG24.11.25 giving results of bumper tests of 40/50 HP. chassis front springs with and without Ferodo interleaving and at your request I communicated said results to Firths, pointing out that such tests did not show any appreciable difference in the life of the springs with Ferodo interleaving as compared with standard springs, and drawing Firth's attention to the considerable inconsistency in the life of the main plates, varying as it did with interleaving from 10.5 to 21.4 hours, and without interleaving from 11.5 to 20 hours.

We remarked that we attributed this inconsistency to similar inconsistencies in the heat treatment of the plates and felt sure they (Firths) would recognise the necessity of holding an enquiry into the matter.

We are now in receipt of Firth's reply dated 16th inst. copy of which is hereto attached.

You will note reference is made therein to their (Firth's) letter of 25th August and our letter of 9th Sept. I find that Firth's letter of 25th Aug. was handed to you with mine Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}5/NJ26.8.25 and that our letter of 9th Sept. to Firths communicated the remarks in By7/H4.9.25.

It is very discouraging to note that the results which Firths obtain by the scheme of testing they are carrying out vary considerably and that they do not appear as yet to be able to account for same.
