To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to J c. to EH. ORIGINAL Re Piston Rings. X.2749 I do not consider there is any need to change piston rings through the gap getting slightly wide, providing they are pinned from rotating in the way suggested by us. RECEIVED Regarding whether the top ring should be pinned on one side of the cylinder or the other, there are two ways of looking at this matter, so that it appears to be unimportant. For instance, during the compression stroke, the piston is against the opposite side of the cylinder wall to that of the power stroke, and it is important during the compression stroke that the piston should be very gas tight. X.3076 We will, however, get Mr. Hives to make an experimental run with piston rings having a wide gap similar to that of a much worn ring, and I shall be surprised if he can detect any difference in the order of pinning.
