X.8650. RE SEQUENCE STARTER.

We have had from R.{Sir Henry Royce} a note (copy to EY.) R1/M24.11.25 containing new recommendations on the sequence starter.

The design of the actuator box switch is to be fundamentally altered so that it cannot get in until the pinion is nearly in gear, and it cannot get out again until the pinion is nearly out of gear. This therefore cancels any instructions based on the previous design of actuator box unit, and no doubt RD. will give an entirely new set of instructions for this unit, the LeC. design of which may possibly be to hand this week.

No alteration to the electrical windings of the starter motor is suggested, but there is an alteration in the reduction ratio of the epicyclic gear, so that there will have to be instructions from the D.O. by which RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} can alter the three motors which we at present have from the present reduction gear to the new one.

As regards the double switch unit, there is no fundamental alteration to this, but it has already been arranged with RD. that the winding space for the heavy current winding will be more suitably utilised, the section of the strip being taken down to not less than equality with that of the field winding of the motor, and
