A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Esq., Rolls-Royce Ltd., D E R B Y. Dear Robotham, In the course of conversation with Mr. Spurrier Jr.{Mr James Royce} he advised me that he had had a discussion with you on the subject of aluminium cylinder blocks fitted with dry liners, and has asked me to communicate with you with regard to inspection of a unit which we have had under test here for some little time. The unit in question, as you know, is a 6-cylinder, 3 1/2" x 5", and after completing a duration test on the test bench was installed in one of our transport department vehicles. The unit has to date completed approximately 40,000 miles in service, and at the moment it is not convenient to remove it from the chassis. We will, however, have this done as soon as possible, and after inspection here, it will be forwarded to you for inspection by yourself. As far as could be seen from the original test on the bench, the marking on the liners was perfectly satisfactory, and it would indicate that there was no question of local expansion of the block in the region of the combustion chamber which caused the liners to be unsupported. At the same time a number of such blocks were put through our experimental department, three or four of which had to be scrapped due to porosity. We have one of the remaining cylinder blocks, which was kept as a spare, and if you would like to have the opportunity of inspecting this | ||
