Re Double Rear Brakes with stiffened Drums. X.2

Below is an extract from Mr Haldenby's Weekly Report Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/Hy{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}21/L22913:-

"We have received our first set of Dunlop
"detachable wire wheels adapted to double
"rear brakes. The brake drums were made
"of lighter section than the ones which have
"given satisfaction on wooden wheels. The
"result was that trouble was experienced
"due to the brake drums springing badly.
"When either the inner or the outer brake
"was applied the drums went out of round
"and resulted in a poor brake also in
"the drum fouling the aluminium cover at
"the point where it is turned over round
"the edge.

"We have made and tried a pair of
"drums of thicker section and these appear
"to be quite satisfactory, no appreciable
"springing being noticed. The difference
"in weight between the thin drum and the
"thick is 3 lbs 6 ozs per wheel. This
"weight is rather big, meaning nearly
"7 lbs increase in the axle weight. Perhaps
"we have some unnecessary weight in the drums
"now.

"As this type of brake is now being
"produced I suggest that we get along by
"using the heavy drums and in the meantime
"try drums of various lighter sections."

Mr Elliott urgently requires you
to instruct up 4 more sets of above.
