-6- Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}12/RH.{R. Hollingworth}22.5.39. Inspection. A complete detailed report is being given by HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH.{R. Hollingworth} but we give herewith several points on the general condition of the parts. Main bearings which are Vandervell strip white-metal on steel shells are very satisfactory considering the amount of running, and other than local cracks on the edges of several intermediate bearings, are in good condition. The same bearings have been refitted for further running of this unit in II.S.V. Other than No.6 big end which is scored, the remainder are in excellent condition and are of the standard Wraith type, thin section in AC.9 material. The wear on the crankshaft which is in .4 carbon material is negligible. One feature which is not satisfactory is the way the distributor and oil pump drive gear has risen on the shaft, having to bend its taper locking pin in doing so. This testifies to the loading to which it is subjected. Some wear has taken place between the cam teeth S/2R and the distributor gear which have the modified tooth form. We feel that this condition is worse than normally anticipated to drive the oil pump and distributor and further investigations will be carried out. Regarding the remainder of the unit, this is in excellent condition and represents one of the best strips after endurance that we have had, which is borne out by the fact that other than several new valve springs, no new parts have been fitted during the re-assembly for further running in II.S.V.
