Copy. To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from BJ. BJ3/E.22.6.27. 20 HP. VERTICAL SHUTTERS. ----------------------- Referring to your BY8/H.21.6.27. this appears to be almost entirely a matter of appearance, as the present shutters are satisfactory. Jigs and tools will cost £650. I presume the jigs and tools, which are being used for the present shutters, are not yet worn out but might be replaced later when the vertical shutters are being introduced, as it is a pity to scrap a lot of jigs and tools if they are in good order. We do not yet know whether the alteration in appearance will warrant the extra cost as we do not yet know what is likely to be the extra cost. It is hoped that some improvement may be introduced to the control as stated in CWB7/GM.21.5.27. page 4, which reads as follows:- "Radiator Shutter and Starter Carburetter Control. The design of this is not liked at all. It is exactly similar to that reported on unfavourably on 12-EX. The lever for the starter carburetter is unnecessarily large and obtrusive, while that for the shutter control, which should be noticeable, could hardly be seen. This design has also the disadvantage that the fitting must be placed at the bottom of the instrument board with the operating lever projecting below, where it is very close to the left knee and is often accidentally knocked and moved in entering or leaving the driving seat". if this can be arranged without any considerable extra expense.
