-8- FLAME DAMPERS for Induction Systems. I examined a new form of flame damper which has been tested by Hispanos and the French 'Jupiter'. It consists of a number of alum. plates drilled with conical holes the plates being bolted together in the form of a pack. Its advantage appears to be ease of manufacture and robust construction, but to offset this the waste area between the holes necessitates enlargement of the carburetter intake to provide sufficient aggregate area to prevent restriction. Two prints are appended shewing the flame dampers being tested on the Hispano and Jupiter. VISIT TO HISPANO SUIZA FACTORY. I had a very interesting visit to the Hispano factory at Bois-Colombes accompanied by Col. Fell. The thing which impressed one on first passing through their factory is the orderly and clean condition of their shops. No material or parts are seen standing in the shops the machines being so arranged that parts pass from one machine to the other until the final operation when it passes into store. The machines appear to be arranged in sequence converging on the stores. The greater percentage of the machinery is automatic and I should estimate about 25% female labour is employed. They have some very interesting machines and one designed by Hispanos did very rapid work in cutting and screwing valve seats and drilling and recessing for the valve guides and springs. The whole operation for the six cylinders is done simultaneously and by the arrangement of the machine insures that the guides are perfectly in alignment with the valve seats. The machine is arranged so that it will not operate unless the cylinder block is registered in the correct position on the machine. Very excellent workmanship and finish is displayed on all Hispano parts and all parts are subjected to very searching inspection before passing to stores. They are still manufacturing some of the old type screwed in liner engines but the new wet liner engine is well established on a production basis. | ||
