B.V. Chassis General v.{VIENNA} Capt Barnato's if there is one W/N. Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}8/HL.27.9.40. re CHASSIS No: B-16-AW. CAPT. BARNATO. We have had a look at the two items sent by you and covered by your Memo. reference Br.4/H.24.9.40. 1. CONE. The brass portion of the cone is retained in it's housing by being put in as a press-fit. Considering that this bronze piece has come away without having seized on either inner or outer diameter, it seems fairly clear that it has never been put in with sufficient interference fit and that therefore the trouble is due to a production error. On Experimental cars, we have completed 53,000 miles, 25,000 miles of which consisted of 'bus work and produced 88,000 gear changes, without having any cone trouble. 2. SERVO LINING. We find that the design has made the erection of the servo too difficult. When a servo has been dismantled and is being re-erected, there are no less than four spigot fits which have to be concentric. We are altering the design to cut down the spigotted fits to two. We find that with the present arrangement the servo plate will almost always run eccentrically due to binding of these spigots. Will you please see that the filter elements are changed at the recommended mileage on the B.V's with which you come into contact, as we wish to obtain a figure of merit for the bearing life under conditions where no neglect is allowed for.
