With reference to your memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}8/N.17.3.38 concerning chassis B.144.HK.{Col. T. Harker - Sales} We suggest that the owner be recommended to run his engine on low viscosity oil such as Mobiloil Arctic. Although the wear is rather heavy we have known cases with Bentleys in which the wear has been greater per 1000 miles; from the figures given in the report it looks very much as though the owner does a considerable amount of town running and the thin oil will no doubt help considerably in reducing the wear due to the following two reasons

(a) A low viscosity oil will reach the bores quicker than the standard viscosity oil when starting up.

(b) Due to its low viscosity an oil such as "Arctic" will allow a greater quantity of oil to be thrown into the bores by the bearings.

From our tests in France and on the test beds the oil consumption will be slightly higher but we do not anticipate trouble in this respect since the oil consumption does not appear to vary in the same proportion as the viscosity.
